A PINsentry card reader is a small handheld device that you can insert your debit card or authentication card into. Then depending on what process you’re trying to complete in Online Banking, you’ll be asked to type in your details to generate a unique eight-digit code.

Why do I need a PINsentry card reader Barclays?

You’ve received this because your account has been upgraded to protect your transactions when you bank online. The PINsentry card reader is used to authenticate your identity by generating a one-off 8-digit code so that you can make use of all our Online Banking services.

Do Barclays still use PINsentry?

Please note that although Mobile PINsentry is a feature of the Barclays app, it’s only designed for use with Barclays Online Banking. There are currently no functions within the Barclays app that require PINsentry authentication.

To get started, visit Online Banking – then select ‘Order PINsentry card reader’ or ‘Upgrade to PINsentry’, under ‘Order’ in the ‘Service centre’ menu. If you haven’t registered for Online Banking, you can register here.

You’ll only need to use a PINsentry card reader when you register for the Barclays app. If you don’t have one, you can complete your registration at one of our cash machines or in branch.

Can someone else use my PINsentry?

Yes, you should be able to use someone else’s card reader, even if it’s from another bank, but you can only use your own bank card and PIN. For your own security, you should only use a card reader from a trusted source and make sure that the label on the back is intact.

Can I order a new PINsentry?

You can order a PINsentry card reader by contacting our Customer Services Team. We’ll deliver the card reader to your registered UK address, and you should get it within five working days. There’s usually no charge for a replacement card reader.
